How to perform a lymph node aspirate | VETgirl Veterinary CE Videos

This VetGirl video demonstrates how to perform a lymph node aspirate. This particular patient had generalized lymphadenopathy, with the primary differential being lymphosarcoma (LSA). When performing a lymph node aspirate, hold the node by exteriorizing it towards the skin. There are multiple ways of aspirating (e.g., with just a needle, with a needle and syringe, etc.), so pick the way you feel the most comfortable with that gives you the best diagnostic yield. Avoid the center of the node (or mass), where there may be more necrosis. Gently blow this out onto several slides, avoiding a thick sample. Check out our VetGirl podcast on “Common mistakes to avoid with cytology” to find out how to submit a perfect cytology sample!
