How to catheterize a male dog for a urine sample | VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Videos

March 2017

In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, we demonstrate how to catheterize a male dog for a sterile urine sample. This can be easily performed without sedation by just using gentle restraint.

First, make sure to have all the appropriate supplies readily available including:

  • Sterile gloves
  • Sterile lubrication
  • An appropriately sized red rubber catheter
  • An appropriately sized adaptor or syringe to collect the sample from the tip of the red rubber catheter
  • A sterile red top tube or specific urine culture container for sample submission

Place the dog in lateral recumbency, and have the restrainer extrude the penis from the prepuce. Use scrub to gently clean the tip of the penis. Once this has been done, insert a lubricated, appropriately sized red rubber catheter directly into the lumen of the penis until it is in the bladder. At least 10 mls of urine should be obtained if submitting for both a urinalysis and culture. Once the sample is obtained, the catheter should either be sutured in place (with butterfly tabs of white tape and simple interrupted sutures for a temporary urinary catheter) or gently and swiftly removed.
