How to induce emesis in cats | VETgirl Veterinary CE Video

July 2016

In this VETgirl online veterinary CE video, we demonstrate how to induce emesis in the feline veterinary poisoned patient. What type of emetic should you be using in cats? In cats, the use of apomorphine and hydrogen peroxide are not routinely recommended as emetic agents; that’s because apomorphine is rarely effective and hydrogen peroxide can result in severe hemorrhagic gastritis (again, specifically for cats). Also note, there is no effective or safe home effective agent that cat owners can use at home; if emesis is recommended, immediate veterinary attention is warranted to have appropriate emesis induction performed with an alpha adrenergic agonist such as xylazine or dexmedetomidine (again, specifically for cats). When in doubt, make sure that it is safe and appropriate to induce emesis in the poisoned patients.
