How to perform a Schirmer Tear Test | VETgirl Veterinary CE Videos

In this VETgirl video, we are demonstrating a Schirmer Tear Test (STT) in a dog. This test measures the tear production by the lacrimal gland and the gland of the 3rd eyelid. Any patient with ocular discharge or redness should have this test performed. This test should be performed PRIOR to any drops being instilled on the eye. As you can see here the sterile strips come pre-packaged. While still in the package, the strips can be bent at the notch to allow for easier placement. Care should be taken not to handle the notched end of the strip as the oils present on skin will affect the wicking properties of the strip. The notched end of the strip with the small blue dye line should be placed in the lower conjunctival fornix about half way between the medial and lateral canthus. It’s important that the strip makes contact with the cornea and is not blocked by the 3rd eyelid. The strip remains in place for exactly 1 minute, and the eyelids may need to be held closed. As the tears are wicked up by the strip, the blue line will be seen advancing along the strip. The measurement should be read immediately after removal of the strip, as the tears will continue to advance along the strip. Normal dogs should secrete 15 mm or more in one minute.
