How to avoid iatrogenic urinary catheter occlusions | VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Videos

In this VETgirl video, we demonstrate the “must-do” steps of creating an appropriate urinary catheter line out of a sterile intravenous catheter bag and extension set in the veterinary clinic. To prevent accidental occlusion of your urinary catheter set (e.g., for a urethral obstruction), make sure to take these two key steps to prevent iatrogenic occlusion! By simply using a wire cutter (or toe nail clipper in this video), you can easily remove the two normal fluid clamps (e.g., roller, clamp) when using extension sets for sterile urinary lines. This is particularly important with feline urethral obstruction cases, which are commonly seen in the emergency setting.
