In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, we demonstrate how to prepare a surgical pack. This is a commonly performed task that veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants must feel comfortable performing.

  1. I know this isn’t a video regarding how to properly clean surgical instruments, but I think it’s worth noting that any instruments placed in the ultrasonic cleaner need to be fully submerged. If handles are sticking up, like they are in this video, those instruments should not be wrapped in a surgical pack because they are not considered clean.

  2. The tabs should be folded out on surgical packs to be able to pull them away from the center, keeping it sterile….

  3. Quick, to the point but thorough. Definitely steps that need to be taken to ensure longevity of our instruments

  4. I was taught never to lock the hemostats.. every clinic, veterinarian, will have their own way of how the want it wrapped and packed….knowing the basics though is important.. and yes, they should be fully submerged in the sterilizing solution for the time indicated. The whole gauze in bowl was something I’ve never seen but I could see that being a very useful technique!

  5. Great reminders on the process but I was taught to wrap the pack with the first corner tucked halfway under the isturuments or basket, to allow a tighter wrap and of course leave a tab for the Vet to open, and then have the other folded tabs point in the middle for easier access. However, every clinic is different!
