In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, Dr. Nancy Zimmerman, MS, CCRT, DACVS (with help from Dr. Jennifer Mahon, DACVECC too!) demonstrates how to place an esophageal feeding tube in a cat. This procedure requires general anesthesia, sterile technique, a feeding tube (e.g., a large bore French red rubber), appropriate equipment (including a scalpel, suture, Carmalt forceps or the equivalent, an E-collar, etc.), and the patient placed in right lateral recumbency. This video, filmed at the Oquendo Center of the Viticus Group, demonstrates a procedure that veterinarians should feel comfortable performing to provide enteral feeding – particularly to the icteric cat!
