In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, we demonstrate how to place a urinary catheter in a female dog using the MILA U-LightTM urinary access system. Placing female urinary catheters can be a challenging yet rewarding skill for veterinary technicians, and is essential for effective management of select hospitalized patients. The MILA U-LightTM urinary access device allows for clear visualization of the urethral papilla making it easier to pass a sterile, lubricated urinary catheter. Visualization of the urethral papilla can replace the practice of blind urinary catheter advancement potentially resulting in reduction of patient discomfort, time spent and less technician frustration experienced during the procedure!

Functional urinary catheters give veterinary staff the means to monitor urine output in hospitalized patients, which provides veterinarians valuable information regarding the patient’s hydration status, fluid handling, and renal function.
