October 22, 2014: Emergency management & treatment of the critically ill diabetic: DKA & HHS

Diabetes Kills Animals? Diabetes Kosts A Lot? If treating a crashing, unregulated diabetes mellitus patient sounds scary, fear not. In this 2-hour, VETgirl online veterinary CE webinar, Dr. Garret Pachtinger, DACVECC and Dr. Justine A. Lee, DACVECC, DABT review diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemic, hyperosmolar syndrome (HHS), with a focus on pathophysiology, clinical presentation, clinicopathologic changes, and treatment. A case-based approach to the DKA patient will be discussed, including initial triage, diagnosis, work-up, fluid therapy, electrolyte and acid-base correction, blood glucose monitoring, central line access, and insulin strategy. Thanks to generous sponsorship from Abbott Animal Health, this VETgirl webinar was free!

June 25, 2014: Fluid therapy in real-life practice

LRS? Plasmalyte? VetStarch? Which do you reach for? Not sure what fluid to pick or how much to give? Join us for a 2-hour lecture with 2 criticalists talking about all things fluid therapy related! We'll review fluid therapy and blood transfusion products commonly used in veterinary medicine. The first half of the lecture will focus on IV access, catheter types, body fluid compartments (e.g., intracellular fluid vs. extracellular fluid), types of fluid loss (e.g., hypotonic vs. isotonic), and the difference between crystalloids and colloids. This webinar will focus on synthetic and natural, isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic types of fluids, along with the use of colloids as an important component of fluid resuscitation.
