In this 2-hour webinar, Dr. Fernandez will review transfusion of blood products (e.g., packed red blood cells, whole blood, plasma, etc.) as a common, life-saving therapy in veterinary medicine. Often used in patients with severe anemia or coagulopathies, it can also be used as a "preventive measure" when significant blood loss is expected (e.g., intraoperatively during splenectomy, etc.). In this lecture, we review the basic principles of transfusion medicine including the indications for their use of the different products commercially available, blood typing, crossmatching, collection and administration. In this lecture, we also review the rare transfusion reactions that can be seen in dogs and cats, along with adverse effects from massive transfusion administration. https://vetgirlontherun.com/webinars/april-7-2016-blood-transfusion-medicine-principles-practical-aspects-2-hrs/

Blood transfusion medicine: principles and practical aspects

Medicina de transfusion de sangre: principios y aspectos prácticos

In our first ever, Spanish VETgirl online veterinary continuing education webinar, Dr. Alberto Fernandez, DACVECC reviews blood transfusion medicine in small animal medicine. In this 2-hour webinar, Dr. Fernandez will review transfusion of blood products (e.g., packed red blood cells, whole blood, plasma, etc.) as a common, life-saving therapy in veterinary medicine. Often used in patients with severe anemia or coagulopathies, it can also be used as a “preventive measure” when significant blood loss is expected (e.g., intraoperatively during splenectomy, etc.).
