In this VETgirl online veterinary CE video, our board-certified veterinary surgeon demonstrates how to perform a linear foreign body surgery. Most importantly, be able to detect these immediately by doing a thorough oral exam in the patient. Once the linear foreign body is diagnosed, most surgeons do NOT recommend cutting the string under the tongue until the patient is in surgery. Unfortunately, linear foreign body surgery can be quite complicated due the need for multiple enterotomies, a gastrototomy, and the risk of perforation and secondary septic peritonitis.

For more information, check out our video on how to radiographically and ultrasonographically detect a linear foreign body obstruction in dogs and cats HERE.
