In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, Dr. Nancy Zimmerman, MS, CCRT, DACVS (with help from Dr. Jennifer Mahon, DACVECC too!) demonstrates how to place a central line in the jugular vein in a dog, utilizing the Seldinger technique. This video, filmed at the Oquendo Center of the Viticus Group, demonstrates an important procedure that veterinary technicians – especially those in specialty practice – must be aware of how to perform. Placing a double-lumen or triple-lumen catheter can be very helpful in the critically ill patient to allow for multiple venous ports, a sterile port for total parenteral nutrition, etc.

  1. Hi Dr Nancy! Great detailed and fun explanation on placement of a central line! In different cases and patients how would you pick your central line – the length, the catheter french size, single/double/triple lumen catheter etc, for a small breed dog or cat vs a large breed dog? Do you routinely take an xray to check on the final position of the central line?
