In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, Dr. Chris Ralphs, DACVS at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, reviews how to perform a joint tap in the elbow of a dog as well as how to inject intra-articular medication (in this case, hyaluronic acid – to provide joint lubrication – and steroids, to reduce inflammation). Veterinarians should feel comfortable performing joint taps in the patient with joint swelling to help rule out degenerative diseases, infectious diseases (e.g., Lyme arthritis), immune-mediated disease (e.g., immune-mediated joint disease), etc. Likewise, being able to perform an elbow tap allows allows for the administration of inta-articular medication.
