Kelly Foltz, CVT, VTS (ECC)Kelly Foltz is a 1999 graduate of Mercer University with a bachelor’s degree in English and a 2006 graduate of Athens Technical College with an associate of applied technology degree in Veterinary Technology. She joined the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians and Nurses in 2012 with recertifications in 2017 and 2022. From 2012-2020, Kelly was employed by Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine as an inpatient/urgent care technician and supervisor and in August of 2020 she relocated to Gainesville, FL to accept a position as an ICU shift lead at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2022, Kelly joined BluePearl as their Mid-Atlantic Regional Nursing Partner, where she serves as a nurse administrator for hospitals in MD, VA, KY, TN, NC, SC, and GA. In addition to her clinical work, Kelly is a lecturer, author, educator, and served on the AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities from 2017-23, serving as Vice Chair in 2021-2022 and as Chair in 2022-2023. She has represented technicians on the AVMA Task Force on Veterinary Technician Utilization in 2019 and the Working Group on Veterinary Technician Utilization in 2020-21. Her professional interests include technician engagement and education, feline medicine, neonatal and pediatric nursing, trauma, and vascular access. Kelly maintains active credentials in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. In an alternate universe, she is a flower farmer, pickle entrepreneur, and full-time beekeeper.

Sara E. Gonzalez, DVM, MS, DABVP
Dr. Sara E. Gonzalez received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (2011) and Master of Science (2007) degrees from the University of Florida. In 2021, she became a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Canine and Feline Practice. After graduation, she spent several years in small animal private practice in Manhattan, Kansas. Following this experience, she joined the faculty at Kansas State University as Small Animal Emergency Clinician in the Veterinary Health Center and Clinical Veterinarian in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (2016-2018). In 2019, Dr. Gonzalez moved to Georgia, where she serves as Clinical Associate Professor of Community Practice and General & Behavioral Medicine Section Head in the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Gonzalez instructs pre-clinical students in vaccinology, professional and clinical skills, Spectrum of Care, and dentistry. She primarily works with senior veterinary students on the Community Practice rotation. Her research interests include scholarship of teaching, vaccine titers, and dentistry. When she isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and completing artistic endeavors.
Amy graduated from Bel-Rea Institute’s Veterinary Technician Program in 2000 after receiving her BS in biology from the University of Nebraska in 1996. Amy worked as a veterinary assistant and receptionist while going through school and after graduation, she worked in small animal emergency and general practices and in university research labs.

Patty Lathan, DVM, DACVIMPatty Lathan, VMD, MS, DACVIM, is an associate professor of small animal internal medicine at Louisiana State University. Previously, she was on faculty at Mississippi State University. Her primary interest is endocrinology, specifically the management of adrenal disease and diabetes mellitus. She has published several articles and book chapters, given lectures throughout the United States and internationally, and currently serves as the President of the Society for Comparative Endocrinology. Her students also publish educational endocrine music videos as an assignment for her elective, and those can be viewed on her YouTube channel.

Justine Lee, DVM, DACVECC, DABTVETgirl was the brainchild of Dr. Justine Lee. Years ago, while frantically studying for her board examination(s), she decided to take some time out to relieve some stress (aka “panic) by running. While pounding the pavement, she thought, “Why can’t I listen to this stuff on my Walkman while I exercise?” (She is old, and this was pre-iPod days). Since sleeping on top of her textbooks didn’t appear to osmotically work, she decided that this “listen and learn” modality would truly be the best way to “take it all” in while frantically multi-tasking. Sue Yee Lim, DVM, PhDSue graduated with a DVM from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2009 and went on to continue her studies at Hokkaido University. She graduated with her PhD in Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2014 and her research was focused mainly on the application of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for the diagnosis of canine pancreatitis. After finishing her PhD, she returned to Malaysia where she taught as a Senior Lecturer before continuing her research on pancreatic lipases in the GI Laboratory at Texas A&M. She has since gained her ECFVG certification, making her a licensed veterinarian in the United States and she hopes to pursue a residency in the future.

Alison Manchester, MS, DVM, DACVIMAlison Manchester grew up in Rochester, NY and later attended veterinary school at Cornell University. During her DVM studies, a project on E. coli-associated granulomatous colitis solidified her interest in gastroenterology. Dr. Manchester completed her Small Animal Internal Medicine training at Colorado State University and became board-certified by the ACVIM in 2018. She has recently completed a PhD focused on immune responses in dogs and cats with chronic intestinal inflammation. She graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on exotic animal and conservation medicine. Her professional path led to over 25 years of practicing clinical small animal and exotic emergency medicine in both private and corporate practice environments in Virginia and in Florida. The myriad of opportunities to teach, mentor, and lead during these years were deeply fulfilling and inspirational. Through these personal and professional experiences, there developed an increased awareness of the far-reaching need for veterinary well-being awareness and healthy coping strategies. This combination fostered Sonja’s passion to better understand and increasingly support, the holistic health of the veterinary caregivers. Dr. Olson’s full-time role currently is Veterinary Wellness Educator for the BluePearl Health & Well-being Team, working alongside licensed mental health professionals. The team has had the opportunity to create initiatives and resources as well as facilitate discussions on well-being concepts that foster a more compassionate, healthy caregiving community and culture. Both in her BluePearl role and outside of work, she seeks to support veterinary associates more globally through podcasts, writing, speaking virtually and in person to veterinary colleagues, and creatively collaborating with other like-minded souls. Dr. Olson founded her wellness platform, Heartstorming Wellness in 2022 to support these well-being endeavors (https://sonjaolsondvm.com) She is certified as a Mental Health First Aid Instructor, Compassion Fatigue Educator through The Figley Institute, a Certified Mindful Meditation Instructor, an AVMA Wellbeing Educator, Teacher Trainer in Trauma-Informed Care and Secondary Traumatic Stress, and a Certified Instructor for Emotional Intelligence & Psychological Safety. Her recently published book “Creating Well-being and Building Resilience in the Veterinary Profession: A Call to Life” was released in March 2022 through Routledge Publishers (Amazon - Creating Wellbeing and Building Resilience in the Veterinary Profession: Olson, Sonja A.: 9780367418793: Books) and is now available on Audible as of April 2023. Arturo Otamendi, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology)Dr. Arturo Otamendi attended Louisiana State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences. Following the completion of his undergraduate studies, Dr. Otamendi attended Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine where he received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. He then completed a yearlong small animal rotating medicine and surgery internship at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Following that, Dr. Otamendi completed a neurology & neurosurgery residency at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He then practiced clinical neurology in the San Francisco Bay Area for 4 years before returning to New Orleans to practice neurology and be closer to family. Dr. Otamendi was born in Venezuela and moved to the New Orleans area at 9 years old. He is also a life-long musician, with his main instruments being trombone and bassoon. He currently performs as Bassoonist for the Symphony of New Orleans. Dr. Otamendi’s clinical interests include inflammatory brain disorders, spinal surgery, and neuro oncology.

Garret Pachtinger, VMD, DACVECCDr. Garret Pachtinger, DACVECC is the Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of VETgirl and is committed to veterinary education through technology. Dr. Pachtinger is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Following veterinary school, he completed a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery, a one-year internship in emergency and critical care, and a three-year residency in emergency and critical care at the University of Pennsylvania, becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2010. After completion of his residency, Dr. Pachtinger joined the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center in Levittown, Pa.

Barbie Papajeski, MS, LVT, RLATG, VTS (Clinical Pathology)Barbie teaches clinical pathology and laboratory animal courses in the veterinary technology program at Murray State University and is a continuing education instructor for the Veterinary Support Personnel Network. Before full-time teaching, she worked at the Breathitt Veterinary Center diagnostic laboratory. She currently serves as secretary of the Academy of Veterinary Clinical Pathology Technicians and the Kentucky Veterinary Technician Association. She resides in western Kentucky, near Land Between the Lakes, where she loves to hike with her 2 sons and husband. She shares her home with 3 dogs, 4 cats, and an assortment of feathered and scaled animals.

Rose Peters, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology)Dr. Rose Peters graduated from the University of Illinois in 2005 and went on to complete a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery with VCA. Afterwards, she worked as an emergency clinician for canine, feline, and non-traditional species in a New Orleans multi-specialty practice where she ultimately became the head of the department. She also became certified in veterinary acupuncture through CSU to expand the Rehabilitation department services during that time. Neurology has been a long-time passion, and Dr. Peters finally left New Orleans to complete a Neurology internship at a multispecialty practice in Virginia, and then completed a residency with board certification in Neurology at the University of Florida. She also holds the ACVIM certification in Neurosurgery and has enjoyed a broad range of medical and surgical cases in her time working in multispecialty private practices in New Orleans and South Florida. She is happy to have returned to the University of Illinois to join old friends on the clinical neurology team as an assistant professor of veterinary clinical neurology. She is interested in finding the most effective ways to empower veterinary students, house officers, and graduated veterinarians with the skills required to serve today’s community needs. Rose’s research focus is on veterinary neurology medical education with additional special interests in neurologic problems in non-traditional species and integrative medicine for the neurologic patient. Rose is the recipient of the Heiligenstein Excellence in Teaching Award and is repeatedly ranked “excellent” by her students.

Jane Quandt, DVM, MS, DACVAA, DACVECCDr. Quandt obtained her DVM from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. Following this, Dr. Quandt was in a small animal practice for one year then decided to pursue an anesthesia residency and board certification. She completed an anesthesia residency and Masters in anesthesia at the University of Minnesota and became boarded in anesthesia in 1993. In order to improve her ability to manage critical cases, Dr. Quandt then completed a second residency in small animal emergency and critical care and became boarded in small animal emergency and critical care in 2007. Dr. Quandt was on faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota and is currently a tenured full professor in comparative anesthesia at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Quandt has had the privilege of be awarding the Carl Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award and the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award.

Kathryn Reif, PhD, MSPHDr. Kathryn Reif is an associate professor and the inaugural holder of the Bailey-Goodwin Endowed Professorship in Parasitology in the Department of Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University. Andrew Rosenberg, DVM, DACVDDr. Andrew Rosenberg earned his Bachelor of Science with distinction in research from Cornell University in 2005 and Cornell Veterinary School in 2009. He completed his 3-year dermatology residency with Animal Dermatology Clinic in southern California in 2013 and achieved Diplomate status with the America College of Veterinary Dermatology in the same year. He received the American College of Veterinary Dermatology Clinical Science Residents Research Award for his work in cyclosporine (Atopica) associated gingival overgrowth in dogs. He is the President-elect of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. He has multiple publications and lectures throughout nationally and internationally. He has appeared on television on Animal Planet’s the Zoo, News12 New Jersey and Nat Geo Mundo. He has been on numerous radio shows and podcasts. Dr. Rosenberg has a strong interest in both allergies and autoimmune skin diseases. While not in the office, he donates his time to treat skin conditions of animals in zoos and wildlife centers. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with Jackson, his Labrador retriever, as well as skiing and traveling.

Catherine Ruggiero, MS, DVM, DACVIMDr. Catherine Ruggiero is a board certified veterinary nutritionist and manager of Scientific Communications at Hill's US. She completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine training at the University of Missouri in 2014. Prior to that, she received a Bachelor of Science at St. Lawrence University and a Master of Science in Biological Sciences at Fordham University. She was an associate veterinarian at a small animal veterinary practice in Upstate New York for just over three years before returning to the University of Missouri to pursue residency training in small animal clinical nutrition. Dr. St. Denis is a consultant on the Veterinary Information Network in feline internal medicine and lectures internationally on all things feline.
Read MoreDr. Rachel Starr graduated from Michigan State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, in 2000. She began her work as a veterinarian as a mixed animal practitioner in rural Ohio and then as a shelter veterinarian in Columbus, OH. She moved back to Michigan in 2005 and become a small animal veterinarian in the Traverse City area. After an initial interest in surgery, she began to explore alternative therapies, learning Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation in 2010, and adding frequency specific laser therapy in 2011. She also took an introductory course in Nutrition Response Testing in 2011. After starting to incorporate it into veterinary practice, she decided to pursue Advanced Clinic Training and graduated from that program in 2018. She is currently practicing in two small animal clinics in Northern Michigan where she is passionate about non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical holistic therapies.
