In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, we demonstrate how to perform venipuncture to obtain blood using a butterfly catheter from a cat. This modality of phlebotomy is an excellent for both simultaneous blood sampling followed by administration of a medication (e.g., a sedative, anti-emetic, etc.). This technique is commonly used in veterinary medicine, and veterinary professionals must feel comfortable performing this technique with a butterfly catheter.

  1. I don’t mind using butterfly catheters, but I like attaching to tube directly to it. The video seem awful slow. I worry about clotting

  2. So many technicians love these. I personally am not a huge fan. I prefer jugular on cats and I am pretty darn good at them! 🙂 These to me, run way too slow and if you have a kitty who is getting fussy, they love to jerk their legs and you lose your needle. I also worry about clotting. IF i ever do use these, I LOVE the ones you can attach to the vacutainers! Those are great!
