In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, Dr. Nancy Zimmerman, MS, CCRT, DACVS (with help from Dr. Jennifer Mahon, DACVECC too!) demonstrates how to place a trocar-style thoracostomy chest tube in a dog. This procedure requires heavy sedation or general anesthesia, sterile technique, and appropriate equipment (including scrub material, drape, scalpel, suture, Carmalt and mosquito forceps [or the equivalent], 3-way stopcock, adaptors, transparent film dressing, bandage material, etc.). This video, filmed at the Oquendo Center of the Viticus Group, demonstrates a procedure that emergency veterinarians must feel comfortable performing in the emergent/critically ill patient with a severe pneumothorax.
