How to perform a Life-Saving Palatopexy on a Brachycephalic Dog | VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Videos

In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, Dr. Chris Ralphs, DACVS at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists reviews how to perform a life-saving palatopexy on a brachycephalic English Bulldog. While this is a temporary “tacking” procedure, it can quickly alleviate an upper airway obstruction in dogs with acute respiratory distress secondary to an elongated soft palate. Referral for surgical correction of the elongated soft palate is warranted for permanent correction.

  1. What do you call this kind of mouth gag? I don’t use mouth gags very often but this one looks very helpful!

  2. Sorry everyone! Yes, that is a a Dingman retractor used for cleft palate surgery in people. I usually just use a mouth gag for this procedure but thought the Dingman would help with the video!
