How to restrain and sex a mouse | VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Videos

In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, Amy Johnson, BS, LVT, RLATG, CVJ, VETgirl’s Manager of Content Development reviews how to restrain and sex a mouse. Learn two methods to properly restrain a mouse, and identify if it’s a female or male mouse. Be prepared when that pet mouse comes into the veterinary practice!

NOTE: Well, technically the term is anogenital distance instead of urogenital distance, so when wow’ing your veterinary staff, use “anogenital” instead. We stand corrected.

  1. Telling the difference in sex of a mouse is done by looking at the distance of anal opening from urinary opening, as well as noting if there are visible testes. Restraint can be done by scruffing like a cat and supporting it all the way down its back with same hand.

  2. The single handed restraint can be so tricky, but so useful! I remember being so frustrated when I was first learning how to do it properly. It does take some practice, but eventually got the hang of it!
